A Newborn Session Is About Much More Than The Baby
Almost three years back when my friend asked me if I had ever taken newborn photos (at the time I did almost only model portfolio sessions), I was quite happy to try! So I researched, googled, pinterested – posed and propped newborn sessions seemed to be the thing to do. I tried it out for a few other friends as well that welcomed babies into this world. Even though the pictures turned out pretty, the style didn't quite click with me.Then lifestyle photography, a breath of fresh air, entered the scene, and I got so excited – YES, parents should be in the pictures! But after a few lifestyle newborn sessions, I still felt like something was missing. Lifestyle sessions are planned to mirror only the beautiful, peaceful, and perfect little moments of real life – I wanted more for the babies and their families.Yes, you want to remember those squishy cheeks and delicious toes.Yes, your kiddos will be curious to see what they looked like. But with the current fads of newborn photography we forget the potential that photographs have in capturing real life, honest moments, and natural portraits. Through natural pictures you an show your bond, your dynamic, your devotion, and who you were as a family:
Show who you were as a parent. Photos of the baby are something your family will always appreciate, but pictures of you are what your kids will hold onto when you're gone. Being your awesome, caring, parenting, and sometimes extremely exhausted self, is what will make for important memories.
Capture how older siblings connected with the newest roommate. Were they excited, broken down in tears, or a little bit more hesitant?
Grandparents – we have to make sure that they are part of the pictures as long as they can.
So there – newborn sessions should really be about family.
