Morning Musings

Julia-on-the-beach-San-Jose-And-San-Francisco-Bay-Area-Documentary-Newborn-and-Family-Photographer-1It was a warm October day when my friend Julia and I headed out to to wander along a beach in Half Moon Bay. We got to talking about the importance of taking pictures, because she was carrying a small camera with her. She wants to take a lot of pictures of her life now, so she can show them to her kids in the future.

"I'm sure they will be interested to see how mommy was back in the days."

Julia and her husband had only recently moved to the San Francisco bay area, which brought back the vague memory of me wanting to photograph all the things when we first moved here. I haven't been great at getting in front of the camera, though. Julia's sentiment made my perspective shift – every day pictures of me will matter. It felt important to capture something to remember this day by, so I took these pictures with my iPhone 5S. There are limits to what a phone's camera can do, but I was still very happy to come across these pictures a couple days ago when I was de-cluttering my phone. After that beach day I bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 that I always carry in my bag, just incase there' something I need to photograph. Lugging around my bulky work camera isn't an option most of the time, and my phone is seldom enough to capture something in the way that I want. Now I just have to work on getting in the pictures, so my potential future kids can see what I've been up to.Julia-on-the-beach-San-Jose-And-San-Francisco-Bay-Area-Documentary-Newborn-and-Family-Photographer-2Julia-Half-Moon-Bay-Beach-DayUPDATE: After Julia saw the blog post she kindly sent this image she took of me the same day. The first thing I noticed? Nova's twisted head from shaking off the sea water. I'm just kidding – my eyes went straight to my muffin top and the poop bag I'm carrying. But you know what? In 10 years I'll look at this picture and go "Hey, not bad – look at those tan legs!"Half-Moon-Bay-Beach-Day
