What If I Fly?

"What if I fall?" Oh but my darling, What if you fly?

This quote by Erin Hanson has stuck with me for the past couple of years, and it's felt more relevant than ever the past week or so.

Starting a photography business (or any business for that matter) is nerve-racking, exhausting, exhilarating and scary all at once.

There is no certainty that you can make it work, but it's certain that if you don't work hard the business will never be sustainable.

What if I fall?

I was especially worried two weeks ago because I only had one session booked for October. I thought "This. This is the fall." But I put my head down, and kept doing the work, adjusting things here and there.

A couple of weeks later I suddenly have not only booked my target amount of sessions, but I actually booked some extra client sessions for past clients I just could not say no to.

And then, a slight panic hit. What if I fly? And can't keep up when I'm in the air?

Being worried about starting something new is natural, but it can also be very scary when things actually work out. Successes can make you feel nervous because they still inevitably bring about some changes.

What if I haven't thought of everything?

There's no way to tell if October is just a fluke or if I can replicate this for future months, but I will embrace the opportunity to see how I can fit admin and marketing work into a full schedule of client work, as well as learn whether I need to adjust anything when it comes to how I do my work.

What if I fly? For now, I can't wait.
