Storytelling Photo Session Ideas | Bay Area Family Photographer
Since I decided to focus solely on documentary newborn and family sessions from here on out, I have thought about different daily events that would be fun to have photos of. In case you are trying to decide what kind of day in your family's life you'd like to have documented, here's a little list:
Everyday routines
Morning routines – mis-matched pajamas, straight-from-the-pan pancakes, and hunting for matching socks. Lazy snuggles, chin-to-chin goodness from your eldest, or full-on action from the start.Stay at home parenting – documenting a parent's day with the kiddos. Cheerios strewn across the dinner table, finger paintings layered on the floors, and chubby little legs sticking out from behind the couch.Evening routines – bubble baths, brushing teeth, and curled-up storytelling.
Location visits
A laundromat – something about them is so fascinating to me because we don't really have laundromats in Finland.Ballet class – it's a great environment to capture the quirky little things that make the girls unique in a setting where they are supposed to be uniform.Travels – maybe you're visiting a new place and want a fly on your metaphorical adventure-wall?Beach day – I've shot on the beach several times before, but beach visits are just so good for the soul, aren't they?Pool day – the sparkle of the splattering water, the joyful scream when dad grabs a foot under the surface, the energy when the kids jump in.
Important people
Grandparents – having pictures of them with you and your kiddos is just priceless.Cousins, aunts and uncles – the more the merrier? We share special bonds with more than just our core families, but rarely get photos together.BFFs hanging out – capture the important relationships kids develop early on with their best friends. The never-ending belly laughs, the secret language, the imaginative games.
Traditions
Baby showers, Mother Blessing ceremonies, baptisms, name giving ceremonies, birthdays– any occasion when the important people in your life are all gathered in one place.
Backyard activities
Hula hoop, frisbee, bubbles, sidewalk chalk, water guns, jump rope, water balloons, silly string – all that fun stuff kiddos can do to just let loose, relax, or just scream bloody joy.
In-Home Activities
Bath time – bubbles, faux hawks, and all the favorite toys that take up most of the room in the tub.Nursing – when you want to capture the special bond between you and your kiddo.Crafting, painting, drawing – sometimes the more quiet and introspective moments are the best ones.Baking – who knows what kids are up to when your back is turned? There are a trillion million of things and people in everyday life that are worth documenting– I've barely scratched the surface. Whatever is routine or natural for your family, I'm up for it!
