Why I Do Newborn And Family Sessions, Differently
“Fulfillment comes from within you, by being authentic to yourself” -Cameron Diaz
A year ago I decided to step away from the pursuit of perfectly orchestrated newborn and family photo sessions, because they never felt natural to me. I do my best work when I am capturing little moments between family members, not just their smiling faces. It has been awesome to discover a growing community of photographers who share my passion; providing a modern and authentic alternative to family photos.January is generally a slow month for photographers, but it was my busiest month to date. That tells me that my business is moving in the right direction, even if it feels rough sometimes. Most people aren't looking for documentary family photography, and it is frightening to trust your creativity when you're not sure it will pay the bills. However, I know in my heart that photographing real family life is important. Cheesy perhaps, but that is how I truly feel. The amazing thing about documentary images is that they can evoke powerful emotions, an element that is lost during posed sessions. Pictures of real life connect us to a time we can't otherwise go back to, and they can give us insight into the stories of people we have never met: A single mom bonding with a baby whom she has yet to meet.A dad making his frustrated toddler squeal with delight. The small every day moments that are often forgotten or taken for granted.Pencil in some quality time with your family, and let me capture you as you are in this very moment – it may just be the most relaxed photo session you've ever had.
