I'm worried about winter newborns

Every winter, December-February to be exact, gets fairly slow for photographers in general. Which makes perfect sense for wedding photographers, portrait photographers, lifestyle photographers, and the like.

The weather plays a huge factor in how these sessions are "possible".

The need for these sessions is very seasonal and reliant on sunshine, temperature, fall foliage – you name it.

Families squeeze in holiday pictures into their busy fall schedules.

As a documentary newborn and family photographer, it is a bit different though. At least that's what I would think. Because families are making memories in their homes year round, and a slice of life can be documented any time of the year.

Even more so – newborns are born all year round, and you just can't wait until a more perfect time than right as they are tiny, squishy, rosy-cheeked, and brand new.

A newborn session cannot be pushed back several weeks, let alone months.

I know everyone says it, but that window goes by so fast!

Newborn sessions are not just about the baby either – you as the parent are going through a huge change in your life and your experience is important to capture, too.

But for some reason, even Fresh 48 and newborn session bookings slow down for winter compared to the rest of the year. Which makes me worried about these kiddos.

Do winter babies get newborn pictures to cherish?

This may be due to the fact that in the United States many are busy prepping for the holidays starting with Thanksgiving in November, celebrating with family in December, and pushing through into the New Year for a fresh start. Who would have time to look for a newborn photographer, let alone arrange for a session?

The thing about documentary sessions is that they are so easy. They are! You don't have to pick up your things and leave the house, you don't have to clean the house, you don't have to get dressed up.

You only have to be you, snuggling up with your loved ones and your brand new baby.

"It’s nice to have photos that are a little slice of life, that you don’t have to work too hard for. Your house is kind of messy, you don’t feel really put together. It doesn’t really matter because the photos turn out so beautiful." - Jenna G

Another reason for families not booking winter newborn baby sessions could be the fact that families burn through a lot of money during the holidays. Trips, food, gifts – photos may not seem like a priority at that time. But I know from experience that the parents that do prioritize photography, that do take the time to look for a photographer (heck you can do that before all the holiday crazy starts!) – they are so happy that they did.

"I was hesitant to have these photos taken ... because we are not super comfortable in front of the camera. During the session, I felt comfortable and thankful that these moments were being captured. Now I have them, I know I would regret not having them and it’s my biggest recommendation to other soon to be moms." - Julie, February Fresh 48 session
