How does the scheduling of documentary Fresh 48 sessions work?
Because births and babies are unpredictable, it can seem like scheduling a Fresh 48 newborn session can be tricky. As long as expectations are set at booking, you won't have much to worry about. The great thing about documentary photography is that no matter what happens – nurses come in for checkups, baby gets their first bath, nursing, swaddle practice – it's all part of this exciting day and it's all worth documenting. Nothing extra is asked of you.
Step 1: When booking your Fresh 48 photographer
Make sure to talk about what your photographer's process is, when they need to be notified, and remember to bring up any wishes that you have.
Some of my families prefer to have their moments with the brand new family member documented as soon as possible after birth, while others want to wait until they've had some time to rest. If you have older kiddos, you might want to plan for a time when they visit the baby.
If the baby is born when it's already dark outside I recommend waiting until there's natural light – but ultimately the moments win crappy hospital light any day in pictures.
Remember to keep your photographer updated.
If your doctor sets an induction or c-section date for you, make sure to let your photographer know.
Step 2: It's go time!
It's important to let your photographer know when you are heading to the hospital so that they can start planning for possible session times.
Keeping them updated on how fast/slow things are going is helpful, too, but may not be necessary.
Once baby has been born, a specific time can be confirmed.
Sometimes I have to schedule a Fresh 48 session around another session, but usually there's plenty of wiggle room.
Step 3: Picture day
Let your photographer know which building and room they can find you at.
Then all you have to do is be present with your new little one, while someone else takes care of documenting your day.
