10 Tips For Natural Maternity Pictures
You want to remember this time in your life before a new little one joins it. Before the nightly feedings, before the stained shirts, before you're completely spellbound by the most precious swaddled-up spit-dispenser in the world. If you want to capture the everyday of your pregnancy but aren’t quite sure how to do that, here are some tips to get you inspired:
1 – TAKE PICTURES AT HOME
Your home is where most of your kiddo's memories will happen, which is why I'm a big advocate of in-home maternity sessions. Spend some time in your favorite spot – I bet his is where tons of your pictures with your kiddo will happen, too.
2 – KEEP YOURSELF BUSY
Prep the nursery, grab a cup of lemon tea, or do whatever else that puts you at ease in front of the camera.
3 – INCLUDE YOUR PARTNER
And you know – keep them busy, too! The pictures will show your kiddo how you lived your lives before they came into the mix.
4 – INCLUDE OLDER SIBLINGS
They'll feel special to be part of the pictures with you during this transition.
5 – FLATTERING ANGLES
For maternity, keeping your camera at eye-level or angled a little bit downwards will be most flattering and works for most pictures unless there is something higher up that you're trying to include in the picture. But – genuine emotion and moments trump "flattering" every.single.time.
6 – USE SILHOUETTES TO YOUR ADVANTAGE
When your baby belly is showing, you can emphasize it by standing in front of a window for a silhouette.
7 – CAPTURE MILESTONES
The 36 week check-up with your midwife is a great thing to document for the future.
8 – DETAILS
Little details that might seem unimportant right now will be fun to look back at later,
"Oh my gosh we thought we had until August 18th!!!"
9 – CAPTURE WHO YOU ARE
I bet your kiddo will love seeing pictures of what you are like, not just how big your belly was.
10 – CAPTURE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR PARTNER
It's so easy to make the maternity photos all about the belly. I love to include pictures that capture your relationship with each other, how in love you are, and how you're tackling this phase in your life together.I would love to know if you had any Aha moments, for example what details are you going to take pictures of after reading this?Download the first few pages of Unposed Baby Photography – a beginner photography workbook for parents – by filling in the form below!
