A few months back I did a
newborn session in San Francisco for a family that wished the baby's face wouldn't be shown in pictures online. As I shared then, I was bummed at first. But the restriction on online photos also made me think outside the box to incorporate some pictures that would focus on other details.This past Monday I did a session for a lovely couple that had welcomed baby Lena into their lives less than two weeks prior – and I found myself discovering new viewpoints to capture their sweet baby. As a documentary newborn photographer I've focused a lot on expressions of baby, parents, and siblings – but haven't always made a conscious effort to capture details that tell us more about those moments. I used to think detail photos were for photographers that pose the babies, but I'm so excited to be including those details into pictures of baby's real life.All these little things are so easy to overlook as ordinary when taking photos – like mom holding up tiny feet while changing a diaper, baby sucking on her hand (again and again!), as well as all the extra hands when mom, husband and grandmother all try to make sure that this new life is cared for. I found myself very drawn to hands during this session, and can't wait to edit the full session so I can share more!
